During COVID I played Fausto Romitelli’s Trash TV Trance in a garage. Now I’m knees deep in a study of spectral music and the role that Grisey, Dufourt, Murail, and Romitelli played in the development of art music for the electric guitar/the role the electric guitar and the sounds of popular music played in the development of art music. ‘I think popular music has changed our perception of sound and has established new forms of communication. […] The formalism and the a priori of the avant-garde concerning the purity of musical material has neutralised, ‘castrated’ sound.
